Voice Boxes 3D sound is another example of a processor-heavy, Onyx Reality Engine type of application that depends on addressable information architecture. We model sound waves so they can appear to be located in space. The accoustatron, for example, is used to produce the illusion of 3D sound in a virtual reality environment. It usually sounds like new age wallpaper (of natural sounds like you buy as stress reduction tapes). voice boxIn contrast to this, the Voice Boxes are also 3D digital sound devices. These are 3D sound icons for non-virtual space. Two by two inch cubes record, store and play up to thirty seconds of digital sound. When you move them they play, when you open them they record. They can be distributed throughout the room not unlike noisy post-its, or built with, thrown, shaken, etc. When there are one hundred Voice Boxes in a room, as I had at Siggraph 95, it can get interesting, but only as interesting as the ways people use them.
