indeed, this is the way of cultural production. think of personal ads -- the categories that construct one's identity, m, f, s, w, g, bi, whatever -- the way identity is limited to a range of categories.
but, is there a way around this in a limited area of communication of information?
i don't think so. but i do draw a distinction between a more social example and the scope of industries like sperm banks and high-impact databases.
